LSD Trip Test first

Composite trip reports18+Checked 11 October 2026

An LSD trip, hour by hour

An LSD trip usually lasts between 6 and 12 hours. Erowid gives a total of 6 to 11 hours for oral use, with the first effects after 20 to 60 minutes, and the Dutch drug information service DRUGSinfo says a person is still not sober when the effects have worn off (DRUGSinfo). Because people measure an acid trip in hours, this site is built around a twelve hour dial.

Each segment of the dial is one phase. Select a phase to read what tends to happen then, and fragments from composite trip reports: accounts assembled from recurring patterns in published experience reports, never the story of one real person. LSD is illegal in the Netherlands and almost everywhere else. Nothing here is an invitation to use it.

The twelve hours, phase by phase

  1. 0–1 hOnset

Most reports describe the first hour as quiet, then restless. A slight tension in the body, yawning, a change in how the room sounds. DRUGSinfo and Erowid both put the start of the effects at 20 to 60 minutes after taking it, and FRANK notes it can take up to two hours (FRANK).

    Composite fragment

Forty minutes in and it seemed like nothing. Then the edges of the bookcase started to look very sharp, and the fridge was suddenly loud.

  2. 1–2 hComing up

The intensity rises for the first two hours (DRUGSinfo). Colours get brighter, surfaces seem to breathe, music changes texture. Reports often mention a wave of nervous energy here, which settles once the person accepts that the effects are arriving.

    Composite fragment

The carpet pattern was slowly turning. A short wave of nerves, a glass of water, and it eased.

  3. 2–4 hPeak

In a Basel study with healthy volunteers, the strongest subjective effects came about 2.5 to 3 hours after intake (Dolder et al. 2017). Time feels stretched, thoughts jump and connect, closed eye imagery is at its most vivid. This is also when difficult moments are most likely to start.

    Composite fragment

Asked the time three times in what felt like an hour. It was twenty minutes. Laughing about that took another twenty.

  4. 4–7 hPlateau

The effects hold, but they feel more familiar. People describe being able to talk, go for a short walk in a known place or listen to a whole album. Erowid puts the plateau at 3 to 6 hours.

    Composite fragment

Visuals still there, but softer. It became possible to hold a conversation again, slowly.

  5. 7–10 hComing down

The visual effects fade first; the thinking stays different for longer. Many reports describe this stretch as reflective, sometimes tired and emotional. Erowid gives 3 to 5 hours for the come down.

    Composite fragment

Sat at the window as the light changed. Wanted to sleep, could not yet. A plate of toast felt like a big decision.

  6. 10–12 hAfter

Sleep often comes late. DRUGSinfo notes that a user is not sober yet after the main effects, so no driving. Erowid lists 2 to 5 hours of after effects.

    Composite fragment

Lay in the dark with the trip still faintly humming. Next morning: tired, hungry, wanting to talk it through.

Test the blotter before the clock starts

A blotter sold as LSD does not always carry LSD. In 2015 the Dutch drug checking service DIMS found LSD in 73% of samples sold as LSD; 11% contained an NBOMe and 9% DOC, both substances with a different risk profile (Trimbos, DIMS 2015). The 2023 report still mentions blotters with completely different substances, such as NBOMes.

The Dope or Nope LSD test checks a small piece of a blotter for LSD in a few minutes. A colour on the chart means LSD is probably present; no reaction means the blotter does not carry LSD. How it works is explained on dopeornopetest.com, the official site of the test. More on fakes: fake LSD and NBOMe.

Numbers worth knowing

Around the dial

  1. 01

How long an LSD trip lasts, phase by phase

An LSD trip lasts 6 to 12 hours. When the effects start, when they peak, how long the plateau and come down take, and why you are not sober afterwards.

  2. 02

LSD trip reports, three composite days

Three composite LSD trip reports followed hour by hour, from onset to the next morning, built from recurring patterns in published experience reports.

  3. 03

What an LSD trip feels like, effect by effect

What LSD does to vision, sound, time, thinking, emotion and the body during a trip, described from studies, public drug information and published reports.

  4. 04

Hard moments on LSD and what published reports show

What a bad LSD trip looks like, when it tends to happen, what made it easier in published reports, who runs extra risk and when to call for help.

  5. 05

Fake LSD, NBOMe and why a blotter gets tested first

How often blotters sold as LSD carry something else, why NBOMe on a blotter is dangerous, what a reagent test shows and how many tests you need.

  6. 06

Is LSD legal? The law per country

LSD is a controlled substance in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, the US and under UN treaty. The legal status per country, with sources and the date checked.

The timeline goes through the phases with sources. The trip reports follow three composite days from start to finish, and hard moments covers the part of a trip people least expect. What it feels like describes the effects one by one. The law page lists the legal status per country. Every page shows its date.
